Speaker:
In this workshop, Dr. Gabrielle Oliveira will explore the complex processes of migration and dreams for a better life that bring many Latina and Latino students to our classrooms. She will discuss research published in her recent book, Now We Are Here: Family Migration, Children’s Education, and Dreams for a Better Life, for which she followed the lives of 16 migrant families from Brazil, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras and their elementary school-aged children as they navigated the US school system between 2018 and 2021. The workshop will focus specifically on insights into how educators might respond to trauma associated with navigating border and immigration policies in affirming and supportive ways.
