Sonya Troller-Renfree, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Developmental Psychology at 糖心视频, where she directs the Stroller Lab. Her research asks how early experiences, including poverty, stress, and caregiving environments, shape children’s brain development, and what those early brain differences mean for school readiness, learning, and socioemotional skills.
Dr. Troller-Renfree is an expert in developmental EEG, especially mobile and in-home data collection with infants and young children. Her lab pairs resting-state EEG and spectral and aperiodic analyses with longitudinal and randomized controlled trial designs. The goal is to find scalable markers of early adversity, and the lab is now adding measures of cardiac health. She leads EEG data collection and analysis for a national randomized controlled trial that tests whether reducing family poverty changes early brain development.
She has published more than 70 peer-reviewed articles. Her work has been recognized with a K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award from NICHD, the 2026 David Kucharski Early-Career Award from the International Society for Developmental Psychobiology, and designation as a Rising Star by the Association for Psychological Science. At Teachers College, she teaches courses in developmental psychology. Students voted her the College’s inaugural Priscilla Wohlstetter Faculty Mentoring Award.
